ST JOHN'S INFORMATION

Referred to as the City of Legends, St John's in Newfoundland is surrounded by hills that run down to the Atlantic Ocean. A lively and friendly town, St John's offers spectacular scenery, quaint streets, historical sites, and a number of urban parks, all of which are close to The Fairmont Newfoundland.

St John's Parks
The largest park in St John's, Pippy Park is not only a superb place to hike, ski, and camp but also features two scenic golf courses and the Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden. The fascinating Cape Spear National Historic Park was used by US troops to observe German submarine activity during World War II and is just 12 miles (19 kilometers) from The Fairmont Newfoundland. One of the key areas in the birth of telecommunications, Signal Hill Historic Park is within walking distance of the hotel, as is the attractive public space of Bowring Park.

Ocean Activities
To explore the stunning ocean scenery of St John's, take a trip along Marine Drive from The Fairmont Newfoundland. Try sea kayaking in the summer or go on one of the many whale-watching tours available. St John's Harbor is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. The spring thaw provides an amazing assortment of icebergs. Sailing charters are available for those who wish to get a close-up view of these natural wonders.

St John's Shopping / Nightlife
The lively locale of George Street features some of the best bars and restaurants in St John's, while the Avalon Mall has a range of great shops close to The Fairmont Newfoundland.

History of St John's, Newfoundland
Deemed to be one of the best examples of ecclesiastical Gothic architecture in North America, the Anglican Cathedral of St John the Baptist has been listed as a National Historic Site. The Old Garrison Church, The Rooms, the Confederation Building, and the Railway Coastal Museum and the Provincial Museum also offer fascinating insights into St John's history. All are located close to the hotel.

Additional Sites
The Quidi Vidi Village is a picturesque fishing village located two miles (three kilometers) from The Fairmont Newfoundland. The geological museum, the Johnson GEO Centre, is just a short walk from the hotel, and The Fluvarium offers guests the chance to walk through underwater tunnels not far from The Fairmont Newfoundland.
