The Fairmont Newfoundland

SPECIAL EVENTS

At the heart of St John's, the oldest city in North America, is The Fairmont Newfoundland. This is where the dawn breaks earliest and New Year comes soonest, where you can take a schooner out among the icebergs and watch humpback whales, or walk among some of the most breathtaking scenery Canada has to offer. Hold an event of your choice in a truly unique location at The Fairmont Newfoundland.

Themed Events
The Fairmont Newfoundland offers two themed events: a themed coffee break, The Newfoundland Mug Up, and a themed dinner, The Newfoundland Kitchen Party.

The Newfoundland Mug Up
In the early days of Newfoundland the men would leave at dawn to go fishing or hunting. As the mornings were often cold and damp they would take a kettle and some hearty crackers and sweets. They'd sit at the ocean's edge or in the woods and have a "mug up:" they'd start a fire, boil a cup of tea, and have some snacks.

In The Fairmont Newfoundland's rendition, we set up a traditional Newfoundland Station with the look of a 19th-century kitchen including an oil burning stove. The area is decorated with Newfoundland lobster pots, netting, Newfoundland tartan, and other Newfoundland traditional items.

The food consists of things our grandmothers served: raisin tea buns and lassy (molasses) buns with a hot cup of tea, Purity lemon creams and caraway crackers, homemade date squares, peppermint knobs, and Purity syrup; and for those who must have their caffeine, coffee.

In the background we have traditional Newfoundland music such as Irish jigs and old-time fishing songs.

The Newfoundland Kitchen Party
The Newfoundland Kitchen Party places you in a traditional Newfoundland kitchen set-up, with quilters, knitters, and traditional Newfoundland and Irish music, creating a charming, nostalgic atmosphere.
