VAT Benefits
As of January 2004, Mexico has repealed its long-standing 15% value added tax for foreign meetings and conventions. These activities will now be classified as an export, which means that foreign tourists who travel to Mexico expressly to participate in congresses, conventions, or fairs are exempt from paying the VAT for hotels and related services provided by the hotels. In order to enjoy this exemption, planners and clients have to meet certain requirements. These include having the participants confirm migratory status, paying for services with a credit card issued by a foreign country, and making arrangements for their hotel and related services through the organizers of the event.
